About Thema
The same 150 names. Every time.
Thema began as a frustration: when three independent deal teams work the same sector, they consistently surface the same names. Not because those are the right names, but because everyone draws from the same visible layer of the market. The deeper layer, where the more interesting targets sit, requires structural work that the current research infrastructure makes difficult to do at speed.
We founded Thema in London in 2024 to do that structural work systematically, from the public record, for every sector a deal team touches.

Three people. One product.
Thema is a small team with direct experience in the work our customers are doing. We are not building AI tools in the abstract. We are solving a research problem we have personally encountered.
Worked in sell-side research producing sector coverage for financial sponsors. Spent years building target lists by hand before deciding the problem was structural, not a matter of effort. Background in financial data systems and private company assessment methodology.
Graph database and NLP background with prior work on financial document extraction. Leads Thema's technical architecture, including the entity resolution pipeline and the scoring model that ranks targets within a mapped sector.
Career focused on private company assessment and Companies House data analysis. Developed the sector classification methodology that underpins Thema's sub-segment mapping and manages ongoing coverage quality across the sectors we serve.
Our approach
Structure over search
Most market intelligence tools are built for search: you bring a hypothesis and the tool tells you which companies match it. Thema is built for mapping: we tell you what the competitive structure of a sector looks like before you have formed a hypothesis.
UK annual accounts, PSC registers, and mortgage charges together create a structural picture of any private sector that most data vendors only skim. The filing regime is unusually rich compared to most jurisdictions, and we read more of it than anyone else.
A company profile answers: what does this company look like? A sector map answers: who are all the players in this space and how do they relate to each other? Those are different questions, and only the second one tells you whether you have the right names on your list.
Thema is designed to answer the sourcing question: which twelve companies in this sector are worth a call? It is not designed to answer the diligence question once a target is identified. That distinction shapes every design decision we make.
Revenue bands from filings are estimates. Hiring signals are leading indicators, not certainties. Every output we produce states its data source and its confidence level. We do not smooth uncertainty out of sight.
